Third-Party Apps are a big threat to Microsoft and Slack

Microsoft and Slack allow third-party app inclusion. This leads to security threats these platforms. Although Microsoft Teams and Slack are the biggest communication and collaboration platforms today, the security threat is a nightmare for users.

According to researchers, Slack and Microsoft Teams do not review the code of third-party apps. Sometimes it reviews those apps but very superficially. The rest lies with the software freely. This is the highest form of security threat, according to researchers.

According to Earlence Fernandes, Professor of computer science at the University of California, teams, and slack have become clearing houses of an organization’s sensitive resources. So, the third-party apps which run on these software breach any security and privacy expectations.

Microsoft has kept quiet in this matter and has not talked about it, but the company is talking with the researchers thoroughly about this security threat. Although slack has a directory where it recommends users to download apps. These apps are included after thorough reviews and do not violate any security policy.

Slack has suggested IT admins configure their workspaces and allow users to install apps after taking permission. This way there will be fewer threats to the users. The company has said that security and privacy are very crucial for them. So, they have taken necessary steps to protect their users from security threats and have made the platform’s environment safe and secure.  They also added that the apps which the platform offers are thoroughly reviewed.
