The Reddit mobile app doesn’t get major changes very frequently, but this week was an exception, with the app introducing a new “Discover Tab” and subscription management menus.
According to a blog article revealing the functionality, 1 in every 5 users entered at least one new community after utilizing the Discover Tab. Reddit’s director of product for content and communities made the following remark in a blog article:
“At Reddit, we’re entering into a new age of discoveries, with photos and videos at the forefront. With the Discover Tab, we’re going to make it easier to find relevant information and communities. It’s a fantastic new method for individuals to discover and interact with hundreds of thousands of communities all over the globe.”
The Discover Tab has replaced the Communities and Subscriptions tab in the top-level app navigation. Selecting it takes you to a browsable grid list of Reddit posts from a number of subreddits that you may not have been following currently.
According to Reddit, the Discover Tab is populated with material depending on both the subreddits you currently follow and the amount of time you engage in them. As a result, if you spend more time on r/OLED, the tab will most likely display content from other home theatres or display tech subreddits. But on the other side, if you belong to r/Xbox but just don’t check it often, you could see stuff from, as an example, a Halo subreddit, but not as regularly as you would from a subject, you’re interested in.
Reddit claims it won’t utilize demographic data like age, gender, or country to decide what content to display you in the Discover Tab—it’ll only offer you stuff based on your previous Reddit surfing and activity.
You may also narrow your search by selecting a category such as “technology” or “sports.” You may also provide input on particular pieces of content by selecting “show me more of this content,” “show me less of that stuff,” or “hide that content,” which will influence what displays in the tab in the future.
There are a few more modifications as well. Several of the functions from the communities and subscriptions page, for instance, may now be accessed simply by swiping from the left. You’ll be able to view features on subreddits you manage, filter and personalize your communities, evaluate the number of Redditors you are following, and, naturally, travel to the r/all entry point from there.
in fact, everything is available via the original Reddit mobile app for iOS and Android. There are a number of 3rd-party Reddit clients available, but there are no intentions to provide an API at this moment. The Discover Tab will also be unavailable on the online version of Reddit for the foreseeable future.
The new tab is currently being sent out to Reddit’s Android and iOS mobile app users, albeit not everybody will view it at the same time.
